Here is something that might sound too good to be true: I lost 5 kilograms in one month without changing my diet at all.  Weight loss for work-from-home moms sounds like a distant dream for most of us. 

And truth be told, losing weight was not even on my bucket list. It happened organically.

 The entire experience taught me that losing weigh isn’t about punishment or deprivation. It’s about creating space for yourself in a life that often leaves no room for self-care.

    The Reality of Our Work-From-Home Lives

    You know the drill, don’t you? 

    Your office is wherever you can find a comfortable spot. For me, it’s usually the couch or dining table. Between managing deadlines and family responsibilities, most days are spent hunched over a laptop, moving only to refill that masala chai or grab a quick snack. You are like a couch potato.

    I lived this way for years, and my body kept score. The signs were everywhere:

    1. The extra weight that crept on year after year, like an unwelcome guest who overstayed their welcome 
    2. The constant fatigue that made even simple tasks feel overwhelming 
    3. My once-clear skin is becoming dull and acne-prone 
    4. Digestive issues that left me uncomfortable daily 
    5. One by one, my favourite dresses were finding their way to donation bags because they simply didn’t fit anymore

    But I learned my lesson on time, but knowing something needs to change and changing it are two very different things. 

    The gap between awareness and action can feel insurmountable when you’re already stretched thin.

    When Everything Falls Apart

    2024 brought an avalanche of personal challenges that pushed both my mind and body to their breaking point. During what felt like the darkest phase of my life, I had a profound realisation: a sad, unhealthy version of myself couldn’t possibly make my family happy.

    That’s when I made a decision that would change everything: I learned to prioritise myself, even amid adversity.

    It wasn’t selfish. It was necessary.

    The Simple Solution That Changed Everything

    Instead of trying restrictive diets or expensive fitness programs, I returned to something I already knew: yoga and walking. I’d been practising on and off for six years, but consistency had always been my weakness. This time was different because I approached them as essential self-care rather than another item on my to-do list.

    Here’s the simple routine that became my blueprint:

    My Weekly Schedule: 

    3 days a week: Morning yoga sessions (30-45 minutes)

    3 days a week: Morning and evening walks 

    1 day: Complete rest

    Living in Mumbai means the monsoon season makes walking challenging most of the year, so on rainy days, I simply did yoga instead. 

    The flexibility of this routine meant I never had an excuse to skip my self-care time, which is important for any successful weight loss approach.

    The Results That Surprised Everyone (Including Me)

    Within one month, I had lost 5 kilograms. But here’s what surprised me most: I didn’t change my diet at all. 

    No calorie counting, no forbidden foods, no complicated meal plans. 

    Six months later, not only have I maintained this weight loss, but I’m confident I’ll continue losing weight rather than gaining it back.

    The physical transformation was remarkable, but weight loss was only one part of it. 

    Beyond the Numbers on the Scale

    The changes went far beyond what I could see in the mirror:

    Mental Clarity: The brain fog that had become my constant companion lifted, and I could think clearly and make decisions without feeling overwhelmed. 

    Emotional Stability: I stopped getting irritated at the smallest inconveniences, and my patience with my family increased. 

    Not tired all the time: The chronic fatigue that had plagued me for months disappeared, replaced by genuine energy that lasted throughout the day.

    Energy Revival: I started waking up feeling refreshed rather than dreading the day ahead. The sustained energy throughout the day was something I hadn’t experienced in years.

    Positive Mindset: My mindset shifted from negative to genuinely positive. I felt happy and motivated in a way I hadn’t experienced in years. 

    Ripple Effect: When I am happy, I can make others happy, and that was shown in my loved ones’ faces. I offered the much-needed support to my family when they needed it the most. And it helped them.

    Remember, building the habit matters more than duration initially. Those small steps will naturally expand as you begin feeling the benefits.

    “My Schedule Is Chaotic”: Create multiple routine options. Have 15-minute, 30-minute, and 45-minute versions ready so you can adapt to whatever your day brings. This flexibility removes excuses and maintains momentum even during challenging periods.

    The Long-Term Success Secret

    Six months after starting this journey, I’ve not only maintained my weight loss but continue losing weight gradually and naturally. The secret isn’t in the specific exercises or timing; it’s in viewing this as a permanent lifestyle change rather than a temporary fix.

    When you commit to consistent self-care through simple, enjoyable activities that fit your schedule, everything else in your life improves. 

    The most important lesson from this journey isn’t about yoga or walking, it’s about the power of prioritising yourself. When you commit to taking care of yourself consistently, everything else in your life improves in ways you never expected.
